Low Tide Blues… Let’s Get Started with TROML Today!

Low Tide Blues… Let’s Get Started!

Low tide is a good time for beach exercise.

There is plenty of packed sand and room for jogging, bicycling or walking with friends.

Sometimes when the tide is out and the beach is desolate I feel the same way.

There are those times in life when friends and family seem distant, the excitement of life seems far away and it’s just me and my thoughts.

We miss the high tides of our life especially the stormy high-energy filled days.

There’s nothing like big waves crashing at our feet to get our adrenaline going.

It’s so easy to avoid the low tide times in our lives by replaying and reliving old habits to placate ourselves with alcohol, food or whatever is our personal comfort go-to option.

Rationally that makes sense because at the moment our life seems empty, there is not a friend in sight and we need to take care of ourselves the best we can.

Though if we put ourselves in a place of calmness and really think about it we realize those trying times are really the best times to learn about ourselves and grow a bit more into the person we want to become.

What’s the purpose of my life is a good question to ask when you aren’t really sure.

Why not take a piece of paper (or TROML Journal) and simply do a “mind data dump” and brainstorm your thoughts and feelings at low tide moments?

Is happiness the purpose of my life?

Is seeking pleasure different from seeking happiness?

What would my life look like if I was completely fulfilled?

If I have a conversation with myself and write down these thoughts and then review them at a later time will I be able to learn anything useful from or about myself?

Perhaps this low tide period of your life has extended longer than in the past.

We would notice is the tide didn’t come in within six hours.

What have you noticed about yourself these past few weeks?

I believe no matter what the situation, whom the person is that the best answers come from within, from the inside-out.

Our world will tell you otherwise.

Some think you must purchase a certain item or service to be happy.

There are countless people and companies selling you what they think you want or need.

But there is only one person that really matters and that person is you.

I can help you begin that dialogue with yourself.

Is it getting back onto the road to happiness and fulfillment or simply hitting the accelerator pedal to get you down the road faster?

I can help you to learn to coach yourself.

In reality in life the low tides are as beautiful, as meaningful and as fulfilling as the high tides and every moment in between.

There are tremendous sources of energy, inspiration and personal power for you to connect to in our world today.

I am open and enjoy coaching people from all around the world via the internet.

Enjoy today, the absolute best day of your life, positively, absolutely without a doubt.

Fly through a gap into a New Year with TROML!

Fly through that gap into the New Year!

Our yoga classes are a bit more relaxed the week between Christmas and New Year.

It’s a perfect opportunity for more stretching, more extension and more time for reflection.

I always like to find a place for my mat in the front of the class a few steps from a wall of windows.

Looking out into the external greenery somehow makes my internal body warmer and more open to our yoga routines.

Today, the last class of the year the view beyond the window mesmerized me into a deep reflection of the year past and the year forward.

I noticed the changing of a few leaves on a couple young saplings in front of the forest.

One can see the seasons change though in a much more subdued manner than in Upstate New York.

The colorful leaves made me think of the gentle grey in my own head of brown hair.

I am not getting any younger and another year has passed by so quickly.

The comingled forest in front of me somehow summarizes my life.

Like a grand finale of fireworks that builds high into the sky, there were short palmettos in front that gave way to arching, stretching, growing maple and live oak trees which bowed to the mature long needled pine trees and mature oaks.

People, places, and opportunities have come into my life over the years to make me what I am today- not perfect but perfectly planted and growing in my life.

I see the exposed trunks of the long thin palm trees that reach to the sky and think of my parents and siblings, my education and healthy perspective on life that have carried me these many years.

The wider trunks are of oak trees. Some of them are not so straight, even crooked and leaning to one side. Like my journey in life, despite some detours somehow they continue to reach for the sky.

I see that the commonness of the trunks is not their shape but their strength.

Al strong yet some trunks waver a bit in the wind as I have done in the storms of my life.

While this forest is in front of me those years of my life are behind me now, including this past one.

I notice a gap in the trees towards the brightening sky.

A rainy morning has now passed and the day has somewhat lightened.

I wonder what it would be like to shoot through that gap and go higher and farther in the journey of my life.

Like an airplane taking off I would quickly see the clear blue skies and the vast openness of the clear blue ocean not far away.

Even if the final days of the year are overcast and cloudy one can rise above it all into the bright sunshine.

For we know the light is always shining either on this side of our world or the other.

Like Yogi’s central theme of the great Sufi poet who wrote Two Suns Rising:

“What a day today.

There are two suns rising!

What a day, not like any other day.

Look!

The Light is shining in your heart,

The wheel of life has stopped.

Oh, you who can see into your own heart,

What a day, this is your day.”

Let’s be that other sun in this world and become so bright that we light the way for others that can see only darkness.

Let’s shoot through that hole and soar to new heights in our lives that only living our dreams will take us to.

All the best to you, your family and friends in the New Year!

You deserve to be fulfilled in life, absolutely, positively without a doubt.

I am hungry…

I am hungry…

When was the last time you felt hungry?

Not hungry for a job, some sort of achievement or “hungry” for dessert after eating a meal.

I mean really hungry, so much that you wake up because you are hungry?

Like our wealthy midsections, material possessions and bank accounts we are an exceedingly consumptive society.

We acquire, consume and wonder why we aren’t happy.

Have we forgotten the simple joys of life- the smile of a friend or stranger, a simple thought that comes to our mind, and yes the real feeling of hunger?

Do we rejoice in kind words, a friendly gesture and satiating that hunger of ours?

Try eating with no distractions- no audible music, no visual television and no tense thoughts within our minds, hearts and bodies.

Try tasting each bite and savoring each sip.

Thoroughly chew our food and savor the taste while taking a few breaths.

Maybe glancing up and taking in the view outside our window or inside the room.

Then after a few breaths we swallow our food and drink.

A little different than eating quickly so we can get the next word out?

Yes breathe a few breaths with food or drink in our mouths.

How about 5 or 10 minutes of TROML journaling after our meal to capture a few new thoughts, ideas or perspectives?

Dynamic self-realization is the TROML process as Yoda would say…

And what would become of our life if we then did the same for breathing?

What is we could thoroughly digest all our life experiences?

What if we could extract the simple joys and inspiring moments of our lives and simply be those things?

Yes hunger can be troubling.

So too can the introspection of our thoughts, words and actions especially over the course of a lifetime.

But as with hunger, when satisfied in a meaningful way, doing TROML will bring you to a whole new level of awareness and personal power to live your life, a life unique to your being.

Become yourself from the inside-out versus the never ending rat race of trying to be that person of the world that does not and cannot exist.

Sometimes it is the simplest things that trigger the biggest changes in us.

Simply enjoy that next bite of food and sip of drink…

Start a TROML journal and begin to enjoy your self, your life, your being here in this world.

Dec. 2011 PVB Community & YMCA Family Celebrate the Life of Brent & Gerda Ashton

Photos by Maggie.FitzRoy@jacksonville.com
A sign announcing the Celebration of Life for Brent Ashton is displayed in the lobby of Winston Family YMCA in Ponte Vedra Beach.

On Thursday, December 15th, 2011, the Ponte Vedra community lost two wonderful souls- a married couple- Gerda and Brent Ashton who died suddenly in a traffic accident.

Brent worked at the Winston Family YMCA in Ponte Vedra Beach as a Member Services Associate.

The YMCA will host a Memorial Service on Thursday, January 12th at 11 a.m.

In response to their tragic deaths a large paper banner was put on the wall at the YMCA so people could share their thoughts and feelings.

A table was erected for the many cards and flowers for Gerda and Brent. When the banner was full people wrote notes on the top of the table. Another banner was filled with personal tributes as well.

Most notes were about Brent who was a beaming welcoming beacon at the front desk for many years but many included his wife Gerda as well.

What people wrote told the simple retirement life story of this couple who came to Ponte Vedra 10 years ago and made a difference in the community.

“I never knew anyone so friendly and sweet at 5 a.m.”

“Morning workouts were much more bearable with your welcoming smile.”

“Your wonderful British smile was more delightful than my Starbucks coffee early in the morning before swim practice.”

“We will miss you checking us in and always having the answers to our questions.”

“You always let me into the YMCA when I didn’t have my card.”

“No matter my mood you always brightened my day.”

“A shining example of love everlasting”

“I am sure you are up there making the Big Guy laugh. We all miss you. I’ll see you later when it’s my turn.”

“We will miss your smile. See you in Heaven. God just got an awesome angel.”

“Your smile, hair and attitude made every day fabulous.”

“My (young) son remembered how helpful you were to him. You gave him the locker room key every afternoon.”

“Thank you for remembering my name when I came into the YMCA. I loved your good attitude and friendly disposition.”

“I will cheer your Team Manchester United in remembrance of your beautiful attitude.”

“How does a man change the world- one smile at a time- you did it Brent! Thank you!”

“Throughout many years of life, there are but a handful of people you come across where you think I wish I could be like him and make other people feel the way that person made me feel. Brent was one of those (people).”

“You made my days here at the YMCA wonderful and I will really miss your caring presence.”

In reality Brent served us all at the YMCA and through his service he led us to being better people.

Of the many notes written, perhaps the one by Terry simply says it best.

“Brent & Gerda- You touched our lives and made them better. We will miss you both greatly”

Do not Panic… Get TROML!

Do not panic…

We see that command written on the back of the door in our hotel room- “do not panic” in the event of an emergency.

Is there an emergency in your life?

What do you fear in life?

Afraid of getting sick or dying or see that happen to a loved one?

Not sure what the future will bring to your personal life or your professional life at work?

Are you simply feeling lonely or afraid of trying something new and failing?

What do you do when you detect “fire” or “smoke” in your life?

At some point in our life we realize we will not live forever or even that many more years.

While we may not panic at that thought, we may simply go through life avoiding the inevitable and subconsciously choose not to deal with it.

It could be that a life with no panic or sense of urgency is a life not fully realized.

Wherever you are on your spectrum of life now is a good time to get a coach.

A coach is your thinking partner who helps you become aware of your situation and your options.

“If you must leave the room you are in, feel the door to see if it is hot.”

“If it is not hot, open the door slightly to see if you can make it to the nearest evacuation stairwell.”

Common sense yes but sometimes life’s involvements are not common so the sense of experience is not there.

That is what a coach can bring to the opportunity in your life.

Yes friends can help, but a “paid friend,” whose job it is to listen closely, think along with you and help you extract your destiny from within will help.

The benefits delivered by a life coach may be “priceless” to you.

Coaching is a good economical decision.

Remember that floor schematic on the back of the door with a red dot for your location?

What’s the schematic of your life?

Coaching can help you discover the diagram of your life- where you are and where you want to be.

Most importantly, your coach is your ally to help you get to where you want to be.

Start a TROML Journal today.

Take a “TROML Timeout” and simply write down all the thoughts and feelings that come to your mind in the next 10 minutes.

And if you are in a panic remember that we are all in a panic at some point in our life.

You are no different than any other human being- we all have our challenges.

The difference between us is how we react to those challenges.

Taking a “TROML Timeout” is all about realizing that patience can be an incredibly strong positive power in your life.

Not as any sort of forced discipline, but the power of freedom to fully live our lives.

In this moment right now you are perfect and complete, not wanting anything.

Take a moment to be in that moment right now.

With a new understanding of patience, there is really is no need for panic in your life.

There’s also no need to do the same old things and get the same old results.

This is your life to live.

Clogged Drains in Our Life that We Don’t Know About…

Clogged Drains and We Don’t Even Know It…

I bet you that the drain in your shower or bathroom sink is clogged with hair and you don’t even know it.

Sure when it is completely clogged up and the water stops flowing we take notice and do something about it.

But gradually it clogs up right before our eyes and under our feet and it doesn’t even register with us.

I think the way we think is sometimes like that as well.

If we are not careful, little by little negative thoughts come into our minds and take root. Over time they slowly accumulate and change our perspective on life and even ourselves.

Nancy Kline in her book Time to Think tells us that “thinking for yourself is the thing on which everything else depends,” and that “thinking for yourself is still a radical act.”

She lists Ten Components of a Thinking Environment:

1.            Attention- listening with respect, interest and fascination.

2.            Incisive Questions- removing assumptions that limit ideas (and us!)

3.            Equality- treating each other as thinking peers.

4.            Appreciation- practicing a five-to-one ratio of appreciation to criticism.

5.            Ease- offering freedom from rush or urgency.

6.            Encouragement- moving beyond competition.

7.            Feelings- allowing sufficient emotional release to restore thinking.

8.            Information- providing a full and accurate picture of reality.

9.            Place- creating a physical environment that says back to people, “You matter.”

10.         Diversity- adding quality because of differences between us.

This will be the thinking environment of my life coaching sessions with you.

As your life coach I can help you get back on the right thinking track.

There are things we can do today to avoid the clogged drains of our lives.

I can help you extract only lessons learned and inspiration from today and your past in a healthy manner.

And then we can think together and build your future world to insure “fulfillment for the rest of your life.”

How are you thinking today?

Are you thinking today?

Radical indeed.

I Heard Something Different Today… TROML is Calling Me…

I heard something different today…

I heard something different at the beach today.

The seas were a bit rough even though there were no high or low pressure areas anywhere on the weather map in the Southeast.

The tide was closer to low than high but still a few hours from being all the way out.

The shells were quite heavy on the beach and if they were snow one would shovel them to clear the way.

But not at the beach, the shells are our friends, we like them whether their cover is sparse, intermittent or so deep we hear crushing beneath our feet.

The day light of this autumn day had narrowed far too fast yet was still of a duration that exceeded 11 hours. Thankfully we are still far away from the winter solstice when the sun reaches the Tropic of Capricorn and the daylight narrows to nearly 10 hours.

There was only one other person on the beach today, a fisherman rather a fisher woman that needed to get out of the house as I did.

The abandoned beach was full of beauty and solitude as I looked closely down at the shells hoping to find a shark’s tooth.

And then I heard it for the first time.

The sound the tide, the water made as it flowed down through the thick shell bed to return to the sea.

It wasn’t the “clickety-clack” of a train wheel moving over tracks…

It was gentler, more refreshing yet soothing sound.

I had never heard it before so it fascinated me and I had to wait for the tide to recede again so I could hear it again.

Sort of a random wine glass clinking melody…

It made me wonder what thoughts, what little voices I had not taken the time to listen for and to hear in my own being.

I have heard those urges before in terms of living a healthier lifestyle- eat and drink a little bit less, exercise a little bit more and get some rest.

For some reason, like that new sound at the beach I have tuned into new thoughts and feelings from within.

Why not take a little smaller piece of food and chew it a bit more and let it linger in my mouth to the extent that I truly taste each bite?

Perhaps even take a few gentle breaths through my nose?

What’s wrong with eating and breathing at the same time?

As long as I am not talking with my mouth full, as my mother use to say.

Now I am sure there are other thoughts within that can help me be the best I can be in terms of healthy living.

We tend to think of exercise as the problem-solver of weight loss. Perhaps I can simply eat less and enjoy it more?

Or have one less drink or another have one less cigarette?

No that would be too much of a disciplined approach.

But what if I chose the right thoughts that come into my mind and learn to be me from the inside-out?

What if I became so in tuned with my body, mind and spirit that the “clickety-clack” of life was to disappear from my life?

The beach was a new and refreshing place today, why can’t I be like that?

Why can’t I go on discovering myself each day for the rest of my life?

Why can’t I realize the innate power to become the truly unique human being I am destined to be?

Maybe we can, surely we can if we take a moment to quietly stop and start listening to ourselves, discovering ourselves anew.

There’s really nothing magical about the length of daylight in our days.

Sure we all love the summer solstice when the sun reaches the Tropic of Cancer and daylight extends to more than 14 hours.

Or there is no magical effect of the weather on our being.

Does it really matter what is outside of us if we know what is inside of us?

Why not start that TROML journal today and follow the 17-Day TROML PLAYBOOK?

And next time you go to the beach listen for the clinking sound of water running down through the sea shells.

And listen for something within…

Is “Lifeweed” the Same as Seaweed?

“Lifeweed” same as seaweed?

The latest storm has brought crisp green “seaweed” to the beaches of my life.

Seaweed is a generic term for any plant growing in the ocean.

“Lifeweed” is something I just made up.

Dictionary.com defines it as “no dictionary results” which means it isn’t a real word… yet…

So let’s define “lifeweed” as “something in our life that causes us to take notice and think about our life.”

When seaweed is planted and growing in the ocean I bet it is a good thing for the habitat and living orgasms in the salt water.

But when that storm and the tides bring it on to the beach we humans don’t like it so much.

It clutters the look of our sandy white beaches.

Over time it degrades in the dry sunlight and starts to smell.

That is why it triggers a reaction once it comes ashore.

Green “five star” resorts fire up their sand plows with fossil fuels and move the seaweed out of the way for the benefit of their members and guests.

They even bury it to avoid the smell.

What sort of things have you buried in your life?

Knowing they come ashore in other aspects of your life.

But what of the weeds of our life?

The things that come back and reappear when some turbulence comes into our lives?

Do we bury them again and again thinking “out of sight” means “out of mind, out of our thoughts, words and behaviors?”

Why not journal with me past the tides of our lives into the tranquility of the depths of our lives?

It is there where the weeds once grew into our lives that we will find the learning we need.

Why not think and understand and leave the weeds firmly planted there once and for all?

Keep them as a reality but transform them into a good reality in our lives going forward.

When we do that them we become free of ourselves and our life experiences.

We realize the freedom we seek isn’t from external captors.

The freedom we seek is from ourselves and letting the past limit our future.

Life is simple once we find our true and valued selves.

Seaweed is good, even on the beach in my opinion.

“Lifeweed” is good, we all have some.

Let’s turn “lifeweeds” into inspiration and take another step to define ourselves and our lives from the inside-out.

You have your own good TROML program now, let’s make it better.

Come Walk on the Beach with Me…

There is something about the beach that instantly puts us in a good mood.
Maybe it’s the vast open areas of water where you can’t see anything else all the way to the horizon. And then you are far away from your place, your life.
Maybe it’s the brilliance of the stars at night or a full moon rising in the gentle darkness of an early evening.
Or maybe it is the rhythmic motion and sound of the surf coming in and out.
I am being silly, there are no questions from the beach, we bring our own. There are three and a million more reasons the beach is our place of tranquility. A place to go to regain perspective and renew one’s inner being.
Please look at the picture again. The picture was taken at the very moment the sun rose at the horizon to begin another day. It did the same thing today and will likely do it again tomorrow. A brand new day each and every day, the sun rises into our world. It’s all about our personal perspective… do you believe that if you change yourself that you will change not only your world but the world?
I believe it.
Why not let this be the day you decide to embark on creating your own TROML program?
You have one already by the way, why not make it the best possible? It is as simple as taking that walk on the beach and putting yourself in a place where you can think and listen to yourself through the TROML journaling process.
I am here to help you discover yourself. Yours is a true self always pointing to the true north of our life’s journey where destiny awaits us.
The beach, within reach… Dreams within reach down at the beach…

Inspiration from YOGA, Part of My TROML Program…

sitting sun silhouetteI started taking YOGA classes simply for “relaxation and flexibility” purposes. What I soon realized was that the benefit of YOGA was more than simply “relaxation and flexibility.” I found insights into the world of YOGA and the supporting beliefs to be captivating and inspiring to say the least.  I looked increasingly so to YOGA for inspiration to complement my TROML program.

Hence I will share some of Yogi’s insights and what they mean to me and the TROML process.

untitledFrom YOGA class I learn many spiritual truths. “Be a nice person, free yourself… Realize life is a dream, wake up! You have to wake up to the traditions of the physical world, this is real, you think, it is not. When you leave your body at the time of death you will know it was just a dream. Why not realize this now- (your) lifetime is just a dream, otherwise one more lifetime wasted? Break the cycle by waking up!”

YOGA is a Hindu system of philosophy aiming at the mystical union of the self with the Supreme Being in a state of complete awareness and tranquility through certain physical and mental exercises. (Source: Dictionary.com)

namasteThe first of 17 Days in the TROML PLAYBOOK is entitled “Decide to Make a Change in Your Life.” You can only do this by changing how you think and looking at life from a different perspective- perhaps like the one Yogi referenced above.

“Be a nice person, free yourself.”

Namaste, (The spirit in me respects the spirit in you.)
